How we celebrate Thanksgiving in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands
I would like to start by saying, “Happy Thanksgiving!” Like many homes around the world there will be lots to eat, our home is no different. First just to inform you I do not cook. My guy loves to cook and does so very well. So today on Thanksgiving, November 24, 2011 from 10:00 am Virgin Islands time our food has already been cooked and ready to eat. That is a bit early for me, so I usually have a snack until I am ready to eat. Right now I am watching the Macy’s Day Parade on NBC which came on 10:00 am our time. On my part, Macy’s Day Parade just seems to signify Thanksgiving Day and is an intro in to the Christmas Season and our St. Croix Christmas Festival.
So you want to know what is on our menu for Thanksgiving? I will let you know. But I want to warn you there are some things on the menu that I do not eat for various reasons, but that does not stop my guy from cooking what he likes to eat. On the menu is:
-
Brown Rice
-
Macaroni and Cheese
-
Stove Top Stuffing
-
Candied Yams
-
String Beans
-
Corn on the Cob
-
Turkey and Gravy
-
Roast Beef and Gravy
-
Stuffed Baked Snapper
-
Sweet Potato Pie
-
Pumpkin Pie
-
Jellied Cranberry Sauce
-
Complemented by Fresh home made Ginger Beer
My guy also had pig “Souse” for his breakfast, mine was just a bowl of oatmeal with soy milk and a cup of expresso coffee. This is our celebration of thanks for Thanksgiving. Just around 12:00 noon we are ready to eat. Our plates have a touch of what each of us eat. After eating we usually just sit back, relax, watch the TV (he looks at the games) and enjoy the rest of the day.
Of course today, in the U.S. Virgin Islands the weather is like summer time, so what is there not to enjoy. We hope that this account gives you an idea about our Thanksgiving Day living in the US Virgin Islands. Every home may be a bit different in tradition, but you have an idea about ours. There may be a difference in Thanksgiving celebration in each home across St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island in the US Virgin Islands. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy and give thanks. In addition, we hope that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving. Let us know how you enjoyed Thanksgiving in your home. Again, Happy Thanksgiving!
